For Safety's Sake

You can help us serve you better by keeping a few things in mind regarding the care and access to your gas meter.

Safety and Your Gas Meter

The natural gas lines and meters installed in your home are there to carry and measure your natural gas. They are not to be used for anything else.

Here are some things to remember to help ensure your natural gas meter and gas lines are operating safely:

  • Make sure your meter is visible at all times.
  • Don’t chain bikes or dogs to, or hang garden hoses over, your meter set. You may cause damage requiring costly repairs.
  • Keep your meter clear of ice and snow but don't kick or hit the meter or its piping to break away built-up snow or ice.
  • Do not enclose your meter in any way.
  • Don’t let children play on your meter and don’t use your meter as a stepping stool for washing windows or other home projects. Besides the chance of falling and getting hurt, you also risk damage to the gas line or regulator and a possible gas leak.
  • Don’t hang anything from the gas line in your home. This may result in broken fittings and blowing gas.
  • Don’t spray your meter set when watering flowers or grass. In some cases, water can be forced up into the regulator vent opening causing it to operate incorrectly or stop working entirely.

To ensure meters and gas lines are operating properly, we also need to conduct maintenance activities including inspections and meter exchanges. We try to schedule these activities at your convenience and will send you notification, but we count on your cooperation to help us complete these tasks as timely as possible.

Keep Your Sidewalks Clear

We need your help during the winter months so we can continue to provide you with excellent customer service ‑ safely.

As the snow falls and the ice builds, walks and driveways can become treacherous. If they are not kept clear, it can become difficult or dangerous for meter readers, repair technicians and delivery people to provide service to your home.

Even though the vast majority of customers do keep their walks clear and safe, some of our employees do slip and fall or have difficulty getting to some premises. Please keep your walks and driveways safe and clear of ice and snow.

Is Your Dog Keeping Something From You?

Your dog's instinct to protect your property can keep utility services, mail, newspaper delivery and other important services away from you.

If your dog barks, growls or runs at people who enter your yard, you could be missing out on the service provided by our meter readers or customer service employees. If they feel threatened, they may be unable to complete their service call to your home.

If you have a dog, there are two main points to keep in mind to help ensure you get the services you need. First, by keeping your dog inside, on a leash or in a pen, you can protect these service providers and still enable your dog to alert you to strangers. Second, if a service person needs to enter your home, keep your dog in a closed room.

If you want to control your dog's aggressive tendencies, talk to your veterinarian or consider the help of a professional dog trainer.

Even though the vast majority of dog owners are responsible, some of our employees do get attacked by dogs. With your help, we can provide you with the services you want and need ‑ safely.
