Dig Carefully in Your Yard

Understand the locate markings

After you call Alberta One-Call, they will notify the appropriate utility representatives to send out a locator to mark the utility lines in your yard.

The gas line markings may look like this.

Natural gas markings are yellow. They show:
  • The direction the natural gas line runs.
  • The approximate location of the line.

Markings do not show:
  • The depth of the line – which can be just a few inches from the surface as soil moves, changes or erodes.

Stay one metre away for safety

  • Keep a one metre safety clearance on either side of the outside of the locate marks.
  • Do not dig within this area.
  • If you absolutely cannot avoid digging here, do so extremely carefully, taking off a tiny bit of dirt at a time, using a shovel – no powered equipment

These illustrations and captions can be found on this information sheet.

Watch trees and structures
  • Plant trees at least one metre away from locate marks.
  • Do not put a permanent structure on top of any gas lines.
  • This includes garages, decks or additions to your house.
  • Only small, portable sheds are allowed by provincial regulations.
