ATCO Gas collects meter readings and uses this measurement information to calculate how much natural gas has been used each charge period. Our company passes this information to your retailer, along with our delivery charges and your retailer passes these costs on to you.

How Are You Charged?

Your meter measures the volume of natural gas you use in metric cubic feet (MCF).

ATCO Gas bills customers based on the heat value of the natural gas supply, rather than on the volume of natural gas flowing through the meter. ATCO Gas uses a conversion factor when billing your retailer to convert MCF to gigajoules (GJ), a measure of energy.

What is the Conversion Factor?

For most residential customers, the conversion factor is mostly comprised of the heat value of the natural gas supply, a base temperature and pressure factors required by Measurement Canada.

Why does my Conversion Factor seem different each month?

The natural gas supply is regularly sampled and the conversion factor reflects changes in the heat value of the natural gas supply.

How do I convert my meter readings to billed energy?

Follow these steps to convert your meter readings to billed energy (gigajoules). Your previous and current meter readings and the conversion factor can be found on your retailer’s bill.

  1. Subtract the previous meter reading from the current meter reading. This is the volume of natural gas you used.
  2. Multiply the volume of natural gas you used by the conversion factor (sometimes also called the multiplier or billing multiplier).

What are the different kind of rates?

Depending on how much natural gas you use in a month or year, and whether your residence or business is located in the north or south half of Alberta, you will be charged a different kind of distribution rate:

  • Fixed rate -- is applied to low-use residential or commercial customers who  use less than 1200 gJ every year
  • Variable rate – is applied to low and mid use commercial or industrial customers who use more than 1200 gJ and less than 8000 gJ every year
  • Demand rate  – is applied to high use industrial customers who use greater than 8000 gJ every year
  • Franchise fee rate – is set by your municipality, partly as a charge for locating facilities on municipal rights of way. ATCO Gas remits this amount to your local town or city.)
