EDMONTON, Alberta  - (December 22, 2011) - ATCO Gas energized the 2012 Alberta Winter Games Society yesterday with a $50,000 sponsorship of cash and gift-in-kind.

“ATCO Gas is pleased to support a program that showcases the talents and potential of young Alberta athletes,” says Bill Stephens, Senior Vice President & General Manager, ATCO Gas. “As ATCO Gas celebrates its 100-year anniversary in 2012, we look forward to delivering the energy that fuels the spirit of competition, celebrates youth, and creates vibrant communities.” “We are grateful for ATCO Gas’s generous and ongoing support for the Alberta Winter Games,” says Raydon Frayne, Director of the 2012 Alberta Winter Games. “This contribution provides a significant boost that will enable the planning and execution of a first class bi-annual multi-sport competition for young athletes.”

ATCO Gas has been a sponsor of the Alberta Games since 1988. A highlight of ATCO’s involvement in the Alberta Games is the ATCO Gas Torch Relay. Through the innovative torches and natural gas cauldron, ATCO Gas supports the athletes, coaches, organizers, volunteers and host communities by providing a torch flame to ignite the ideals and spirit of the Alberta Winter Games in all participants as a symbol of harmony, goodwill and peace.

The 2012 Alberta Winter Games will take place in the Tri Municipal Region (Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Parkland County) from February 9 - 12. These Games provide the opportunity for many of Alberta’s future elite athletes to enjoy their first taste of competition at a provincial level. The weekend will include 22 different sporting competitions featuring more than 2,800 athletes, coaches, officials, and a multi-faceted cultural program including performing, visual and literary artists.

ATCO Gas provides safe, reliable natural gas distribution to more than one million customers in nearly 300 communities across the province and is part of the ATCO Group of Companies. ATCO Group, with more than 8,000 employees and assets of approximately $12 billion, delivers service excellence and innovative business solutions worldwide with leading companies engaged in Utilities, Energy, Structures & Logistics, and Technologies.
