ATCO Gas collects meter readings and uses this measurement information to calculate how much natural gas has been used each charge period. Our company passes this information to your retailer, along with our delivery charges and your retailer passes these costs on to you.

ATCO Gas Selects Cochrane as First Community for New Technology

Page Content
ATCO Gas will begin upgrading the meter reading technology in the Town of Cochrane on April 5, 2011. By the fall, approximately 13,000 meters will be converted to this new, more efficient technology in Cochrane and surrounding areas.

“ATCO Gas has a longstanding history in the Cochrane area,” said Brian Hahn, President, ATCO Gas. “Investing in this new technology further solidifies our commitment to deliver safe, reliable, cost-effective natural gas distribution service to our customers in these communities.”

The new automated meter reading (AMR) system uses small, battery-powered radio transmitters that attach to existing natural gas meters. Customers will see contractors from Corix Utilities and Itron Inc. in their neighbourhoods installing these transmitters for ATCO Gas. Contractors will carry ATCO Gas-issued photo identification, and will produce it if asked.

Installation of each AMR device will take about 10 minutes per meter. Indoor access may be needed if a natural gas meter is located inside a home or business.

Once installation is complete, customers will no longer see meter readers walking through their neighbourhoods. Instead, ATCO Gas employees will be able to capture meter readings with a vehicle-mounted computer system as they pass by homes and businesses. In the future, ATCO Gas will only need access to natural gas meters for periodic maintenance.

ATCO Gas hopes to automate all one million meters in its service area by mid-2014. Meter readers will be transitioned into new career opportunities within ATCO Gas.
Customers will receive more information before installation begins in their neighbourhood. If people have any questions or concerns about installation, they can visit atcogas.com/AMR or call 310-5678.
