For close to a century, ATCO Gas has been helping to enrich the quality of life in the communities we serve. With a service area rich in diversity, ATCO Gas strives to lend its support to those organizations and initiatives that have a broad reach, and can make a difference in local communities. ATCO Gas is pleased to support:
Alberta GamesThe Alberta Games is the province’s premiere multi-sport event that profiles developing athletes from across the province, generally 12-17 years of age. The Alberta Games are held every two years in different communities across the province. It involves over 2,800 athletes, coaches, and officials and 3,000 volunteers. The Alberta 55+ Games provide an opportunity for Albertans 55 years of age and over to participate in a multi-sport festival. The Alberta 55+ Games are held every other odd-numbered year in different communities across the province with Lethbridge (winter) and Airdrie (summer) playing host in 2009. Through these sponsorships, we provide dollars and gift-in-kind services
such as the use of the ATCO Gas cauldron, torches, tents and soundstages.
This partnership allows us to support youth, seniors, sport, volunteers and
community development across the province. In 2009, ATCO Gas is supporting the 55+ Winter Games in Lethbridge and the 55+ Summer Games in Airdrie as title sponsor of the ATCO Gas Torch Relay. In 2008 ATCO Gas was the presenting sponsor of the ATCO Gas Torch Relay and co-sponsor of the Opening Ceremonies for both the Alberta Winter Games held in the County of Leduc (Feb. 23 – 26) and the Alberta Summer Games held in Medicine Hat (July 27 – 30). In 2010, the Alberta Winter Games will take place February 4 - 7 in the Lakeland region (Bonnyville and Cold Lake) and the Summer Games in July in Peace River. Alberta Ecotrust FoundationThe Alberta Ecotrust Foundation was established in 1992 as a partnership between environmental groups, corporations and concerned citizens. The mission of the foundation is to bring together diverse groups to provide financial and collaborative support to Alberta community organizations working to preserve our environment. ATCO Gas, with its sister companies in the ATCO Group, is a founding member and corporate sustainer of the foundation. Since 1992, Alberta Ecotrust has invested more that $6 million in the people and projects helping to make Alberta a stronger and more sustainable place to live, work and play. We support Ecotrust because it makes an impact in the communities we
serve, putting substantial funding back in the communities where the
projects are being carried out. Alberta Weekly Newspaper AssociationATCO Honors Photographic Excellence
Alberta’s weekly newspapers are an integral part of Alberta’s
communities. For
more than 85 years, weekly newspapers in Alberta have served our communities
with a steadfast and professional commitment to reporting the news,
celebrating their communities’ growth and honoring their citizens’ service
and accomplishments. Their dedication is mirrored by the Alberta Weekly
Newspapers Association (AWNA) which boasts 113 member newspapers throughout
Alberta and the Northwest Territories. ATCO is the title sponsor of the annual Photographic Awards for AWNA. The awards honour photographic excellence in several categories of photojournalists from weekly newspapers across the province. “We are pleased to support AWNA’s commitment to excellence in bringing the news to Albertans and applaud the efforts and skill displayed by each participant in the ATCO Gas Photographic Awards,” says Brian Hahn, ATCO Gas President The 2008 ATCO Photographic Awards winners were announced in January 2009. Emergency Preparedness PartnershipsBeing aware and prepared is the focus of Emergency Preparedness week May 3-9, 2009. ATCO Gas is working with several communities across the province to increase awareness of the importance of individual emergency preparedness. In recent years, ATCO Gas, ATCO Electric and local officials have introduced customized Emergency Preparedness Guides to area residents and businesses in the Grande Prairie region, High Prairie, Banff, Airdrie, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and County of Lethbridge including Barons, Coaldale, Coalhurst and Nobleford. The first Guide was introduced in 2006 in Edmonton as part of an education program helping Edmontonians better prepare for major emergencies. Through the Community Emergency Preparedness program, City officials work with community groups to help them help their members prepare for the unexpected. As well as supporting the project financially, ATCO Gas is providing expertise in natural gas emergencies, as well as safety and disaster preparedness to support the training and education objectives of the Community Emergency Preparedness program. The home emergency planning guide has been produced in six different languages and is also available online or at City of Edmonton fire stations, police stations, recreation facilities, all public libraries, and the Citizen Action Centre in Edmonton’s City Hall These quick reference guides have advice on preparing for and coping with severe weather, floods, chemical releases, influenza, as well as providing key contact information, utility outages information and an outline on preparing home, travel and pet emergency kits.
