Alberta Games

The Alberta Games is the province’s premiere multi-sport event that profiles developing athletes from across the province, generally 12-17 years of age. The Alberta Games are held every two years in different communities across the province. It involves over 2,800 athletes, coaches, and officials and 3,000 volunteers. The Alberta Senior Games provide an opportunity for Albertans 55 and over to participate in a multi-sport festival. The Alberta Seniors Games are held every other odd-numbered year in different communities across the province with Forst Saskatchewan playing host in 2007..

Through these sponsorships, we provide dollars and gift-in-kind services such as the use of the ATCO Gas cauldron, torches, tents and soundstages. This partnership allows us to support youth, seniors, sport, volunteers and community development across the province.

In 2007, ATCO Gas is supporting the Seniors Games in Fort Saskatchewan as title sponsor of the ATCO Gas Relay. The 2006 Alberta Winter Games were held February 23 - 26 in the West Yellowhead communities of Edson, Hinton and Jasper.  The 2006 Alberta Summer Games was held in Red Deer July 27 - 30.  This multi-sport event will feature competitions taking place at various locations in the city and county.  ATCO Gas was the presenting sponsor of the ATCO Gas Torch Relay and co-sponsor of the Opening Ceremonies at the Red Deer Centrium.

Alberta Ecotrust Foundation

The Alberta Ecotrust Foundation was established in 1992 as a partnership between environmental groups, corporations and concerned citizens. The mission of the foundation is to bring together diverse groups to provide financial and collaborative support to Alberta community organizations working to preserve our environment.

ATCO Gas, with its sister companies in the ATCO Group, is a founding member and corporate sustainer of the foundation.

As of December 1998, the foundation had approved more than $1.8 million to registered not-for-profit groups in support of 147 grassroots projects in Alberta.

We support Ecotrust because it makes an impact in the communities we serve, putting substantial funding back in the communities where the projects are being carried out.
Applications for funding can be obtained by calling the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation at (403) 209-2245 or toll free at 1-800-465-2147 or visit the website at www.AlbertaEcotrust.com.

Emergency Preparedness Partnerships

Being aware and prepared is the focus of this year’s Emergency Preparedness week May 4-10. ATCO Gas is working with several communities across the province to increase awareness of the importance of individual emergency preparedness.

On May 4, ATCO Gas, ATCO Electric and local officials introduced a customized Emergency Preparedness Guide to area residents and businesses in the Grande Prairie region. Similar guides will also be launched by ATCO Gas May 9 in Banff and June 16 in Airdrie.  In 2007 the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and ATCO joined together to release a guide for Fort McMurray and surrounding communities.

The first Guide was introduced in 2006 in Edmonton as part of an education program helping Edmontonians better prepare for major emergencies. Through the Community Emergency Preparedness program, City officials work with community groups to help them help their members prepare for the unexpected. As well as supporting the project financially, ATCO Gas is providing expertise in natural gas emergencies, as well as safety and disaster preparedness to support the training and education objectives of the Community Emergency Preparedness program. The home emergency planning guide is also available online or at City of Edmonton fire stations, police stations, recreation facilities, all public libraries, and the Citizen Action Centre in Edmonton’s City Hall

These quick reference guides have advice on preparing for and coping with severe weather, floods, chemical releases, influenza, as well as providing key contact information, utility outages information and an outline on preparing home, travel and pet emergency kits.

Fire Prevention Week Partners

ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric are committed to the safety of individual Albertans and their communities.  Both companies are in partnership with the Alberta Fire Commissioner's Office and support National Fire Prevention Week, October 7 to October 13, 2007.

ATCO specifically supports the Children's Program which sees fire departments across Alberta partner with elementary schools and other community organizations to deliver critical life safety educational information to children in Kindergarten to Grade Three, and their families.

"We take safety very seriously at ATCO Gas and strive to create safety awareness among the public as well," says Jerome Engler, ATCO Gas President.  "This partnership aligns with a key area of focus for us - education and prevention programs that promote safety in the home and at work."

The key element for the program is the development and distribution of a fire safety activity booklet and corresponding lesson plan for Alberta school teachers.  Additional elements include an advertising campaign, posters and Fire-Chief-for-a-day contest.

More information on fire prevention and safety tips is available on line from the
Alberta Fire Commissioner's Office.

The Calgary Fire Department Cadet Program

The Calgary Fire Department launched its Fire Cadet Program in 2000 to help teach high school students the principles of leadership, respect, pride and teamwork.  Participation in the innovative program provides each student credit towards their high school diploma.  The Fire Cadet Program embraces volunteerism and strives to teach its students the importance of volunteering.  ATCO Gas has supported the Cadet Program since 2002, recognizing the value of youth and education, as well as community and volunteerism initiatives.

Our support is directed towards a fire-safety education program delivered by Calgary Fire Cadets for children five to 10-years of age.  In 2005, Cadets planned and presented Fire Safety Presentations to over 40 summer day camps throughout Calgary.  The Cadets also provide outreach support to a variety of non-profit organizations.

We also established two annual scholarships for graduates of the Fire Cadets Program who intend on pursuing a career in emergency services following high school.

"By supporting the Fire Cadet Program we are not only nurturing the development of future young leaders, but helping to improve the safety and quality of life within Calgary through enhanced emergency services," says Daryl Kong, ATCO Gas Vice President for Calgary Operations.
