ATCO Gas collects meter readings and uses this measurement information to calculate how much natural gas has been used each charge period. Our company passes this information to your retailer, along with our delivery charges and your retailer passes these costs on to you.

Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon Trophy

Page Content

On your mark, get set, go!

Each year the Chuckwagon Champion at the Calgary Stampede receives a bronzed trophy appreciating the thrill of the sport and recognition of their accomplishment.  Since, 1940, ATCO Gas has been sponsoring this trophy due to the value and spirit that the Stampede generated in the community.

The trophy is redesigned every five years by a different artist chosen by the Calgary Stampede.  Seven identical trophies are cast for each bronze set – one for the Stampede, another for the sponsor and five for the next five champions.  ATCO Gas has a collection of several of the bronzes, while the Calgary Stampede has a collection of all of the bronzes.  The bronzes continue an ATCO tradition and remain a cherished prize and valuable work of art.

Artists who have the distinction of designing the trophy:

  • 1940 – 1971:  Charlie A. Biel
  • 1972 – 1976:  Cornelius Martens
  • 1977 – 1981:  Rick Roenisch
  • 1982 – 1987:  Rick Roenisch
  • 1988 – 1992:  Jay Contway
  • 1993 – 1997:  Jay Contway
  • 1998 – 2002:  Ross Contway & Kathy McCarthy Contway

1940 – 1971:  Charlie A. Biel

Charlie Biel was commissioned by Canadian Western Natural Gas and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede to create the Championship Chuckwagon trophy, as well as a replica of the trophy.  The plaque would be given to the winning outfit while the actual trophy remained on display.  It was suggested that once a competitor won the Derby three times, they would be awarded the trophy rather than the plaque.

Between 1940 – 1972 the Canadian Western Trophies were duplicates of this outstanding original chuckwagon sculpture by Charlie Biel.  In those 31 years, the trophy was won outright four times – by Dick Cosgrave in 1943, John Phelan in 1949, Commodore Allen in 1954 and Dale Flett in 1963.  After each three year win, Charlie Biel made an original artwork duplicate of the original sculpture for future presentation.  Charles Biel died in 1976.

1972 – 1976: Cornelius Martens

Corne Martens was commissioned by Canadian Western Natural Gas and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede to produce a bronze sculpture.  Copies were produced for presentation to winning driver.

1977 – 1981:  Rick Roenisch

Rick Roenisch was commissioned by Canadian Western Natural Gas and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede to create a new chuckwagon bronze trophy and 5 copies for presentation 1977 – 1981.

1982 – 1987:  Rick Roenisch

Canadian Western Natural Gas agrees to expand trophies to include individual bronzes to be presented to the winning outriders.  Rick Roenisch was commissioned to create a new chuckwagon bronze and outriders’ awards with copies for presentation 1982 – 1987.

1988 – 1992:  Jay Contway

Jay Contway was commissioned to Canadian Western Natural Gas and the Calgary exhibition and Stampede to produce an original bronze sculpture and copies for presentation to the winning driver 1988 – 1992.  Outrider’s awards were not presented in 1988 or 1989.  Diane Anderson was commissioned to sculpt outrider awards for presentation 1990 – 1992.

1993 – 1997:  Jay Contway

Jay Contway was commissioned again to produce another original bronze sculpture with copies for presentation 1993 – 1997.  This sculpture includes original outrider art and copies for the winning outriders each year.

1998 – 2002:  Ross Contway and Kathy McCarthy Contway

Ross Contway and Kathy McCarthy Contway were commissioned by ATCO Gas and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede to produce an original bronze Outrider Trophy.  Copies for the presentation were also requested.
